When to see an ophthalmologist

An ophthalmologist is an eye doctor: they diagnose and treat eye disease and can perform medical or surgical procedures. A consultation is worth it if a parent or sibling has glaucoma, if you've been told your eye pressure is high, if you have diabetes or high myopia, and from age 40 even if you see well: the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends a first check at that age.

Glaucoma: diagnosis with OCT and visual field

In most cases glaucoma progresses without symptoms for months or years, damaging the optic nerve. The only way to catch it early is a complete eye exam. At the Estadio store, Dr. Daniel Cabrera, a glaucoma subspecialist, does it in a single visit:

  • Eye pressure and corneal thickness, two key measurements to understand each patient's risk.
  • OCT, which measures the state of the optic nerve.
  • Computerized visual field test, which maps your field of vision.

If glaucoma is found, treatment may include eye drops to lower the pressure, selective laser (SLT) or minimally invasive surgery, with check-ups every 3 to 6 months.

Cataract and retina

Dr. René Cabrera specializes in cataract and retina surgery, with more than 12,000 cataract surgeries over his career. In the consultation he assesses the lens of your eye and your retina, and explains whether you need treatment and which one.
